Course Descriptions-B.A (Ghanaian Languages)

LEVEL 100

GHL 101:   Introduction To Linguistics I               1 Credit    
The course introduces students to the study of language development and nature of language, functions and characteristics of language and human and non-human systems of communication.

GHL 102:  Akan/Ewe/Ga Language Usage (Orthography)               1 Credit
The course aims at helping students to overcome orthographic problems, influence of dialects on the written/standard variant of the language and influence of foreign language(s) on the use and writing of the language.

GHL 103:  Introduction to Linguistics II                  1 Credit

The course introduces students to social stratification of language, characteristics of language and language and culture.

GHL 104:  Akan/Ewe/Ga Language Usage (Writing Systems)         1 Credit
The course consolidates the application of the orthographic rules that govern the written form of the language and helps to make students more conversant with the standard form of the language.

GHL 105:   Introduction to Literature I              1 Credit

The course is designed to introduce students to literature, equip them with literary appreciation skills and make them familiar with the literary genres.

GHL 106:  Introduction to Literature II              1 Credit

The course helps the student to consolidate his/her understanding of literature for developing of flair and love for literature through the study of texts in drama, prose and poetry.

LEVEL 200

GHL 201:  General Linguistic Theory I                 3 Credit
The course introduces the student to the fundamental principles of articulatory phonetics, the basic phonological systems and the relationship between phonetics and phonology.

GHL 202:  Akan/Eve/Ga Language Usage (Essay Writing)                 3 Credit
The course is designed to guide students to write well structured essays in the language and determine structural accuracy of given written prose texts.

GHL 203:  General Linguistics Theory II                  2 Credit

The course introduces students to morphology, syntax and semantics, with a view to preparing them to apply the knowledge to the description and analysis of their languages.

GHL 204:  Akan/Ewe/Ga Language Usage (Translation) 1              2 Credit

The course introduces students to techniques of translation and guides them to translate from and into their language of study.

GHL 205:  Written Literature of the Ghanaian Languages I              Credit 2
This course leads students to intensive and extensive reading and analysis of set books selected from the three literary genres – drama, prose and poetry.  It emphasizes critical analysis of the interrelation of plot, theme and characteristics.

GHL 206:  Written Literature of the Ghanaian Language II             Credit 2
This course guides students to do serious characterization and critiquing of literary works.   It emphasis the concepts of intertextuality, narratology, style, setting, using literature books translated into the Ghanaian language.  The course concerns itself with aspects of the cultural context, aesthetic theories and evolution of poetic, fictional and dramatic techniques.

LEVEL 300

GHL 301:   General Linguistics Theory III              Credit 3
This course is designed to acquaint students with advanced theories of phonology, morphology and syntax.

GHL 302:  Akan/Ewe/Ga Languag Usage (Comprehensive and Summary Writing)            3 Credit

The course guides students to acquire comprehensive and summary writing skills and practise them on selected texts.

GHL 303:   Linguistics of the Ghanaian Language (Syntax)    [Core]               3 Credit
This course leads students into the study of the word classes and syntactic units of the language and their semantic values.

GHL 304: Oral Literature of the Ghanaian Language  [Core]                3 Credit
This course is designed to help students appreciate the literary, artistic and aesthetic qualities of the verbal art forms of their people.

GHL 305: Linguistics of the Ghanaian Language   (Phonetics and Phonology)        3 Credit
This course is designed to guide students to identify the phonetic qualities of the phonemes of the language, their classifications and phonological rules that govern the combinations of the phonemes into morphemes and words.

GHL 306:  Akan/Ewe/Ga Language Usage (Translation II) [Core]                      3 Credit
The course is designed to help students practice translation at a higher level, using texts from disciplines including science and technology.

GHL 307: Written Literature of the Ghanaian Language I    [Core]                  3 Credit
This course helps students to do a more rigorous analysis and critique of selected works of prose fiction, poetry and drama in the language.

GHL 308:  Creative Writing in the Ghanaian Language               3 Credit
This course helps to equip students with the necessary skills in creative writing focusing on prose, drama and poetry writing.

GHL 309: Introduction to Ghanaian Customs & Institutions [Core]              3 Credit
The course introduces students to a comparative study of the traditional customs and institutions of ethnic groups in Ghana with a view to enriching their verbal facility it the discipline.

GHL 399: Research Methods                Credit 3

This course aims at equipping students with the requisite research techniques to enable them carry out research projects and write Long Essays or Project Reports in their language of study.

LEVEL 400

GHL 401: General Linguistics Theory IV             3 Credit
This course leads students to the study of Sociolinguistics and Psycholinguistics, making them appreciate social and psychological factors involved in acquisition and use of language.

GHL 402: Akan/Ewe/Ga Language Usage III (Translation)               3 Credit
The course is designed to consolidate students’ translation skills and help them translate more advanced texts from different areas of knowledge.

GHL 403: Linguistics of the Ghanaian Language (Syntax) [Core]                3 Credit
This course helps students to study and analyses grammatical structures of the language, so as to comment on results of studies meaningfully.

GHL 404: Oral Literature of the Ghanaian Language II  [Core]               3 Credit

This course trains students to do more rigorous and detailed analyses and appreciation of selected verbal art forms in their language of study.

GHL 405: Akan/Ewe/Ga Cultural Studies   [Core]               3 Credit
The course helps students to study and appreciate selected customs, institutions and cultural practices of the people, in terms of modern thinking and values.

GHL 406: Written Literature of the Ghanaian Language IV [Core]               3 Credit
This course is designed to train students to do an in-depth analysis and appreciation of selected texts of the various literary literary genres and further help them cultivate clear and independent thinking.

GHL 407: Akan/Ewe/Ga Cultural Studies II         3 Credit

This course is designed to enhance the student’s ability to critically evaluate cultural practices and institutions in relation to current modalities and determents of socio-economic development.  It focuses on practices and institutions that call for preservation or otherwise, in terms of traditional and modern values.

GHL 408:  Akan/Ewe/Ga Language Usage(Comprehension and Summary) II [Core]      3 Credit

This course aims at helping students do further comprehension and summary writing of advanced texts from different fields of study.

GHL 409:   History of the Linguistics Study of the Ghanaian Language                3 Credit

This course deals with the history of the linguistics study of the language from the very beginning to the present day, and assessment of linguistics findings in respect of the language at various stages/periods.

GHL 410:  Linguistics of the Ghanaian Languages (Syntax and Semantics)                3 Credit

The course guides students to study and appreciate the grammatical structures and semantic values of the Ghanaian Language.

GHL 411:   Linguistics of the Ghanaian Language (Semantics)               3 Credit
This course is designed to help students study semanticity in their language focusing on various levels of meaning and analyse given texts accordingly.

GHL 499:       Long Essay/Project Work            3 Credit

This aspect of the programme enables the students to put the research skills and techniques acquired earlier in the Research Methods course into practice in working on  approved topic for the purpose of producing  long essays or  reports on a projects carried out.
