Course Descriptions - Certificate In French

FRE 011:  Oral Expression I                                     6 Credit Hours
This course is structured to enable learners who are invariably beginners to learn sounds of basic French words.  The emphasis is on Oral Communication.  Learners are taught everyday French usage such as greetings and how to engage in basic conversation.  They listen to a variety of dialogues that have been recorded on cassettes to facilitate their acquisition of these basic skills like making polite requests, making telephone calls and describing the weather. 

FRE 012:  Written Expression II                   6 Credit Hours
Learners are guided to acquire basic skills in constructing sentences in French.  They are introduced to these skills by being helped to express themselves through writing some of the basic conversational exchanges they have come across in their oral course.  They are taught the use of the punctuation marks in French.  They are also gradually introduced to the basic patterns of the sentence in French.

FRE 021:  Oral Expression II                                   6 Credit Hours
This course aims at guiding learners to be able to engage in relatively longer conversations.  They are taught how to initiate conversations, sustain and logically end them.  They also learn how to ask for information as well as give same.  Some of the modules in this course include how to register a protest and how to claim or reclaim something.

FRE 022:  Written Expression II                  6 Credit Hours
In this course, learners are formally taught the use of the present and past tenses.  They are also introduced to the adherence of cohesion in writing and progression in texts.  Learners are taught the types of speech and the organization of narratives.  The emphasis here is on sensitization towards adhering to text structure specifically how to observe logical construction.

FRE 031:  Oral Expression III                      6 Credit Hours
The objective of this course is to enable learners to express themselves freely in French.  Consequently, learners engage in debate on current issues, argumentative topics, narratives and discourse analysis.  Learners are made to observe the appropriate usage of expressions in situations of communication.

FRE 032:  Written Expression III                6 Credit Hours
This course helps learners to be able to give account of what they have read.  It also aims at teaching learners how to do summary and analysis by being able to identify linkage in ideas of a text.  Learners are also taught the use of logical and stylistic devices, the relevance of ideas to the subject and the organization of arguments into coherent and progressive whole.  The observation of basic grammatical rules is strictly enforced in this course.
